How to Grow Mandarins in Pots – a DIY Gardening Guide
Planting Mandarins:
- Choose a large enough pot that will be able to sustain a mandarin tree. Steer away from plastic pots as they can easily be knocked down by strong winds, and use a clay pot instead.
- Prepare a light potting mix with plenty of organic matter, and add perlite or pumice to help with soil aeration.
- Plant the tree into the pot so that it is slightly higher than it was at the nursery. The bud union should remain above the soil level.
- Water the tree regularly to keep the soil moist, but never soggy.
- Place the pot in a sunny area either outdoors if the weather permits, and if not, indoors.
- Fertilize four times a year using a citrus fertilizer once the tree has new growth.
- If outdoors, move the tree indoors before the first freeze for a few hours a day until the tree becomes accustomed to the indoors.
- Move the tree to a larger container once it outgrows its current one.
So now that you know how to grow mandarins in pots, it's time to roll up your sleeves and get to planting!
