How to Grow Spearmint in Your Garden
Spearmint plants resemble peppermint plants, except that spearmint plants have bright green leaves that are pointed as well as lavender flower spikes that can grow up to 4 inches long.
In perfect conditions, your spearmint plant can grow up to a height of 14 inches!
Spearmint is a hardy perennial up to USDA plant hardiness zone 5 and prefers partial shade and well draining, moist, rich soil.
Planting Spearmint:
- Choose to plant directly in the garden or in a pot.
- Choose soil with a pH of 6.5 to 7.
- Make sure the soil is moist, rich, and well draining.
- Plant as soon as the ground is warm and keep the seeds moist while they germinate.
- Once they reach a few inches in height, thin plants to 1 foot apart.
- Be careful when growing spearmint, as it can take over an entire garden. We recommend you plant spearmint in hanging baskets or separate pots.
Spearmint Care:
- Mulch your spearmint plants annually to keep the soil moist and nourished.
- Potted spearmint should be fertilized monthly during growing season using a liquid fertilizer.
- Divide the spearmint plants every two years to keep them healthy.
- Prune your plants regularly.
