How to Grow Hazelnut Trees – a DIY Guide
Hazelnut trees are also called Filbert trees and can be grown in USDA zones 4 through 8. When choosing a variety of hazelnut tree for these areas, choose American hazelnuts which are more tolerant to the cold than European hazelnuts.
Planting Hazelnut Trees:
- Choose a spot in your garden where your hazelnut tree will have enough room to spread.
- Hazelnut trees are not too choosy about their soil as long as it's well draining and has plenty of organic matter.
- Dig the hole twice as wide as the root ball and just deep enough so that the soil line of the tree will be even with the surrounding soil.
- Place the root ball in the soil and fill back up with the soil you removed.
- Tamp down with your feet or hands to remove any pockets.
- Right after planting, water the soil slowly and deeply.
- For good pollination, plant two varieties.
Hazelnut Tree Care:
- Water regularly and never let soil dry out.
- Water deeply once a week if there is no rain.
- If you notice slow growth and pale leaves, it might be an indication that your hazelnut tree may need fertilization.
- If you do fertilize, add a small amount of nitrogen fertilizer.
Hazelnut Tree Harvest:
- Hazelnut harvest is usually done in the fall.
- You'll know they're ready because they'll simply fall to the ground.
- At that point, rake the nuts into a pile and store them.
So now that you know how to grow hazelnut trees, it's time to roll up your sleeves and get to planting!
