Even if you don't live in a tropical climate, you can still grown your own banana trees in pots or containers. Be patient though, as it may take 3-5 years for the banana tree to actually produce bananas if grown from seeds.

If you're growing the regular variety, the banana tree can reach a height of 10-15 meters, but if you're growing the dwarf variety, they'll reach no more than 4 meters in height.

If you're growing your banana tree in the tropics, there is very little care or maintenance needed. Simply plant your banana tree directly in the ground in a sunny spot. After that, your banana tree will not need much care.

Planting Banana Trees:

  • Choose a large, clay pot or container with good drainage.
  • If growing from seeds, soak the seeds in warm water for 24-48 hours to break their dormancy.
  • Plant the seed is a small container until seedlings emerge (2-3 weeks). Keep constantly moist and in a sunny spot.
  • Transplant seedling into pot filled with well draining, sandy soil. Make sure the soil is rich in organic compost.
  • Bananas like a slightly acidic to neutral soil.
  • Place your pot in a sunny place with low wind.
  • Water your banana tree frequently and deeply, but take care as to not over water.

  • During winter, your banana tree will go dormant.
  • Mulch heavily and keep watering to a minimum.
  • Place in a warm, bright spot until spring.
  • Fertilize regularly using a nitrogen-rich fertilizer: banana trees are heavy feeders.
  • If leaves turn brown and dry at the edges, it means you are over watering.

Happy Planting!
