How to Grow Skirret Plants
Planting Skirret:
- Suitable for USDA zones 5 through 9.
- Skirret is a hardy, cool season crop that can be sown directly into the ground after all danger of frost has passed.
- You can also start seeds indoors 8 weeks before the last frost and transplant thereafter.
- Be patient as skirret takes about 6-8 months to fully grow.
- Work the soil deep and remove any debris.
- Choose an area with slight shade.
- Soil pH should be 6 to 6.5.
- Sow the seeds in rows spaced 12-18 inches apart with 6 inches between rows.
- Each seed should be planted 1/2 inch deep.
- If planting roots, set them about 2 inches deep.
- Thin seedlings to 12 inches apart.
- Soil should always be kept moist and free of weeds.
- During cold winters, mulch to keep the plants warm.
Harvesting Skirret:
- Skirret is usually ready for harvest after 6-8 months from planting.
- Simply dig up the roots and eat raw, boil, or roast them.
